We aim to provide a syntaxonomical scheme forthe alpine tundra vegetation of volcano Mount Paekdu(Changbaishan) bordering China and North Korea. From thefield investigations in 1991, 2004, and 2009 a total of 89phytosociological relevés were sampled by the Braun-Blanquetmethod. Obtained data sets were analyzed by tabular handsortingtechnique. Syntaxonomic position and nomenclature ofunits were determined by comparison with mainly Japaneserelevant communities. Ten rankless units in four physiognomicvegetation types were classified: alpine desert vegetation(Papaver radicatum var. pseudoradicatum community,Minuartia arctica community, Polytrichastrum alpinum-Minuartia macrocarpa var. koreana community), alpinewindswept dwarf vegetation (Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. alpinum-Festuca ovina var. koreano-alpina community, Scirpusmaximowiczii community, Oxytropis anertii-Salix rotundifoliacommunity, Carex longirostrata-Dryas octopetala var. asiaticacommunity), snow-bed vegetation (Phyllodoce caerulea-Tofieldia coccinea community, Viola biflora-Calamagrostislangsdorfii community), and colluvial drainage channelvegetation (Carex atrata-Sanguisorba stipulata var. riishiriensiscommunity). The variation of the vegetation resulted fromprimarily the rock and soil particle size and soil mobility, andslope inclination. Some of the plant communities were regardedas local and endemic types. Yet we firmly believe that furtherresearches are requested by much richer materials andsyntaxonomical comprehensive evaluation in betweenelsewhere in the Pan-East Sea (Sea of Japan).
