This study examined the process and meaning of the anecdote of Ginseng Fruit(人參果) which is seen in Journey to The West(≪西游記≫) from religious and cultural perspective. A Ginseng Fruit is an imaginary fruit that gives eternal life once taken. But, it was not appeared in old versions before Journey to the West. The only exception is the appearance of child shaped peach in Datangsanzangqujingshihua(≪大唐三藏取經詩話≫) of the Song dynasty, which is the subtype of Journey to The West. A story on child shaped peach in Datangsazangqujingshihua seems to be delivered from Arabia in the active exchange with Western regions. Such assumption is made possible because it contains a story of a child tree of Dashi country(大食國), which is Arabia, in Shuyiji(≪述異記≫) written in the Tang or Song dynasty. And a story of child shaped fruit was fixed as Ginseng Fruit in Journey to The West at the Ming dynasty. It is closely related to the unique awareness on children and fanatic belief on eternal life of the Ming dynasty.
