본고에서는 김인숙의 소설에 나타나는 ‘자아의 상실’과 타인의 죽음을 통해 자신의 ‘존재’를 발견하는 주체들을 검토하였다. 다원화된 현대사회에서 고되게 살아가고 있는 다수의 현대인들은 자신의 주체를 잃은 것도 모르는 상태로 현재를 살아가고 있다. 이런 사회를 반영하듯 김인숙은 『브라스밴드를 기다리며』의 작중 인물들을 통해 자신의 정체를 잃고 자신만의 공간에 머무르거나, 오랜 기간 단절된 부부의 메마른 관계, 모든 관계는 어차피 불통이라고 생각하는 매표구 안에 갇힌 여성 등을 그려내며, 한번도 주체적일 수 없었던 이들의 상태를 보여준다. 또한 타인의 죽음을 겪으면서 자신의 내면을 찾아가는 작중인물들도 검토 대상으로 하였다. 이런 작중인물들을 통해 작가는 ‘나’를 통해 자신의 주체가 현존해 있어야만 타인과의 소통도 가능하다는 사실을 보여주고 있다. 하지만 사회에 적응하지 못하고 자신만의 세상에 갇혀 있는 인물들이 세상으로 나오려 하는 소통의지는 결국은 우리가 공동존재임을 알 수 있게 한다. 각박한 세상이지만 서로가 ‘불통’인 관계에서는 살아나갈 수 없다는 것이 우리가 이 사회에 진정으로 원하는 기준과 부합한다. 세상과 막혀 있던 관계에서 벗어나려면 스스로 깨고 나가야 한다는 사실을 보여준 것이 김인숙의 작품들이 품고 있는 의의라 할 수 있을 것이다.


In modern times when external factors are disappeared and enabled various conditions, we are faced with confusion of identity in just alienated modern society without 'preservation cocoon'. Also, only if they are entered the situation of a diversified life , modern people that are survivable in the world are living an exhausting life even without the looking back on their self. The author is talking about figures of wandering not only they don't know what to be but also they become ' nothing existence' through the works that want to work in this paper. As soon as “The season of loss” won Chosun libo annual spring literary contest in 1983, she began a literary work activity. The most important motive of Kim insuk's narration is reality where we are standing and she has searched popular world view from a point capturing initial human desire in 80's , has searched our human existence based on woman's identity since 1990. “Waiting for a brass band” on the analysis of this paper has showed that the characters are undergoing much damage weathering the pain of life with characters that in a dry reality communications are difficult like a narration showed in her works since 1990. Even though characters of this novel are showed depressed and helpless looks to be seen since 1990’s works, she deals with various characters of life like plural society in 2000. Her works got out of focusing on most of the women over passed in the 90s and then beginning in the 2000s. The characters of this novel are showed that they are losing own existence, because of stranger’s uncommunicative condition, they are hard to communicative with oneself and condition not to find own’s identity. Then she records not female characters but various characters of life, as well as she have to look after one’s subject to live plural society with finishing 90s and beginning 2000 through work characters. Also their eyes about male or the elderly or a matter of life are expanded until death, getting out of their eyes from the women’s daily life. The meaning of this paper is not only writer’s eyes in the attempt to look and communicate various characters’s inner side in 90s narration which do not face and embrace inside wound ,but also looking at individual subject which lives in 2000.
