Chinese sculpture as we know it today was not considered Fine Art in China or anywhere in the world until the beginning of the twentieth century. Sculpture was largely ignored in China until the nineteenth century when it began to be collected as an antiquity. In the first decade of the twentieth century Chinese objects entered the global market for antiquities and Fine Art through collectors, dealers, and museums in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Many of the first to appreciate Chinese sculpture were modern artists and collectors with modernist taste. The formal values of modern art were fundamental to the "discovery" of Chinese sculpture as Fine Art.
