This article attempts to explore the current and important issues for the development of ecotourism in the U.S. Ecotourism, the idea that nature based tourism could contribute social and environmental benefits, burst into public consciousness in the late 1980s and became virtually a phenomenon in the 2000s. In many countries, it became a substantial focus of debate, generating numerous conferences, new courses and challenging policy development at all levels of government, the tourist industry and the government movement. Therefore, an initial framework for implementing and promoting the ecotourism principles and practices in the United States should be laid without delay. While this study focused mainly on the benefits for ecotourism, the successful ecotourism requires active participation from host communities, the private sector, and NGOs, who, working together with federal, local and state government can successfully implement the best practices of ecotourism.
