The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of serve technique and its manner of execution on the efficiency of the serve in elite male volleyball. A total of 791 serves from 18 sets during the 2010∼2011V-league Championship games were analyzed. The variables of this study were: type of serve(spike serve, floating jump serve, or standing serve), serve efficiency, manner of execution(origin and destination), and result of the action(win or loss). Descriptive analysis and chi-square test were performed with a level of statistical significance set at p<.05. The results of this study showed that the spike serve involved a higher number of points, errors, and actions that limited the opponent. The spike serve most frequently directed toward Zone 5 and Zone 6 and this serve showed the higher level of efficiency compared with that of the standing serve. The results concluded that the spike serve should be effective when the point-to-error ratio is less than 1:2.
