It seems that Lu Xun’s novel, Going Out (1935), rewrote the historical story about pre‐Qin Dynasty. Indeed, it combined Lu Xun’s personal experiences between the lines. In this thesis, I will argue this viewpoint through analyzing the existing historical materials about Lu Xun and the League of the Left‐wing Writers. My conclusion is the novel of Going Out reflected the dispute between Lu Xun and the League of the Left‐wing Writers founded in 1930. In the novel, Lu Xun rewrote the story of Lao Tze as the way of ‘Shade’ to present his depressed feeling to the dismissal of the league. Furthermore, the thesis also discusses the reason Lu Xun chose Lao Tze as the main character is he firstly learnt the story of Lao Tze from Zhang Taiyan, who has experienced the dismissal of the Restoration Society (Guangfu Hui) and the United Allegiance Society (Tongmeng Hui).
