The essence of Christianity is the highlight in Schleiermacher’s thought about religion. Because we do not know whether all christian efforts, including the theological works, correspond with it or not, if it doesn’t precede to determine the essence of Christianity. Schleiermacher’s interests and debates on the essence of Christianity are very suggestive also to Christianity in the situation of the plural religions today. Because they make us think the matter seriously in which the problem of religion have to be dealt with seriously in the christian theology and also about the matter of the identity of Christianity in relation with other religions. The purpose of this study is to describe Schleiermacher’s understanding of Christianity through three religious concepts, such as revelation, religious experience and salvation in “On Religion” (Über die Religion) and “The Christian Faith” (Der christliche Glaube). 1) The concept of revelation: According to “On Religion”, religion’s essence is the intuition and feeling of the universe. Religion takes place by the precedent revelation from the universe. And according to “The Christian Faith”, the highest grade of the human self-consciousness is the feeling of the absolute dependence. Schleiermacher insists that it comes from God. Moreover it is an original revelation of God, its perfect form is found in Jesus of Nazareth. On the other hand, Christianity is a positive religion which exists in the world by the revelation. 2) The concept of the religious experience: According to “On Religion”, religion is neither metaphysics nor morality. In other words, it is neither thinking nor acting, neither theoretical reasoning nor practical reasoning. On the contrary, it is the sensibility and taste for the infinity, that is, to experience it immediately. According to “The Christian Faith”, religion is to experience God that coexists in the feeling of the absolute dependence. This experience is possible only in the highest grade of the human self-consciousness. It cannot take place in the feeling of freedom or in the feeling of dependence that can be found in relation with the world. Thus Schleiermacher tried to find the essence of Christianity, not in a system of Christian doctrine but in inner or spiritual experience. 3) The concept of salvation: According to “On Religion”, Christianity is a religion founded by Christ who has the basic intuition of the universe. Therefore Schleiermacher says that the essence of Christianity can be found only in the idea of reconciliation and salvation through Jesus Christ who is the mediator between the infinite and the finite. So he insists that Christianity is the religion of religions. According to “The Christian Faith”, the essence of Christianity is determined by the redemption as found in the works of Jesus Christ. Christianity is an only positive religion to offer Jesus’s salvation to all humankind. In conclusion, Schleiermacher emphasized that the religious concepts such as revelation, religious experience and salvation are very important in Christianity. In a nutshell an outward look of these concepts have the same importance not only to Christianity but also to the other religions. But an inward look portrays Jesus Christ as the only One who has the revelation of God perfectly, namely as a God’s revelation by Himself. He can only offer the salvation of God to all humankind. Therefore Schleiermacher insisted that Christianity only is the true religion that is based on the person and work of the very Jesus Christ.
