Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious treatment for depression. The goal of this review is to present an overview of CBT for depression, the position and limitation of CBT in Korea, and the advancement of CBT in the present and the future. Many intervention packages of CBT include techniques to address both cognitions andbehavior;cognitive restructuring, weekly activity schedule, mastery and pleasure schedule, etc. Across all patients, CBT and medication showed comparable effects. However, among patients who had severe major depressive disorder, some studies reported that medication was found to be superior to CBT, Therefore, many treatment guideline recommends CBT and/or medication as the first-line treatment in the mild to moderate depression. The application and the position of CBT in clinical practice in Korea has some limitation;irrational delivery system, little awareness of practitioner, etc. However, CBT is the most promising psychotherapy in various application and has been developing in various way. The development and modification of CBT is now being applied to employees, students, and community mental health. The new therapies integrating oriental traditional philosophy and empirical science-such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapyare getting attention of many practitioners and clients.
