This study was to determine the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) characteristics of leachate when the waste had been disposed of for 450 day and 680 day periods. The results showed that the range of DOC concentration was varied according to the raw-wastes landfilled. DOC and humic substance fraction were decreased as the landfill age increased. Specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) values that can be an indicator for unsaturated degree of C-C bonding were obtained from the spectroscopic analyses. These results showed that SUVA value of the humic substance in the landfill leachate increased as landfilling time increased. The result represented that the humic substance in the leachate was transformed into non-biodegradation material. SUVA value was high in leachates from the waste components such as textiles, plastics & rubbers and woods, while it was low in leachates from food and ash wastes. The color-causing contribution rates were diverse according to the waste components tested. The woods wast was evaluated as the most outstanding color-causing component in this study. Color-causing contribution rate by humic & non-humic substance fractions in DOC also changed according to the waste component. Color-causing contribution rate by DOC fraction could be related to the humic fraction in wood waste leachate, and the non-humic fraction in ash waste and metals & glass waste. The color-causing rate by DOC fraction in the other ones was only about in the range of 25~48%.
