Remarkable progresses have been achieved regarding the understanding of the neurophysiologic and neuropharma- cological bases of pain. The principal role of substance P, endogenous opioids, glutamate, serotonin, and norepine- phrine has been proposed in pain perception. With the progression of molecular biology, a potential role of dopamine in pain perception has been also shown in a numerous preclinical and clinical researches. In addition, dopaminergic agents have been suggested to be involved in modulation of pain process. Currently available preliminary findings have demonstrated that dopamine may be actively linked in endogenous control of pain systems, although the clear action mechanisms of dopamine neurotransmission in relation with pain modulation systems have to be further explored.
