Suicide is one of the most serious public health problems. Suicide should be considered as an independent unique is- sue, while suicide has been regarded as just a complication of psychiatric disorders. Suicide has the complex compo- nents such as neurochemical, neuroendocrine, and genetic ones. Numerous studies have shown that the hypofunc- tion of serotonin system in the ventral prefrontal cortex is associated with the suicidal behavior. However, other results for neurochemical basis of suicide including noradrenaline and dopamine systems are generally inconsistent. We re- viewed previous studies on the neurochemical aspects of suicide at various level including neurotransmitter recep- tors, the relationship between hypothalamus-pitiutary-adrenal axis.
