The effect of empty bed contact time (EBCT) on the removal of turbidity, color, CODMn, UV254 and KMnO4 consumption in biofilter were investigated. Experiments were conducted at six EBCTs (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 40 min). The zc200B (biofilter 1), zc100B(biofilter 2), carbonization sludge (biofilter 3) and activated carbon (biofilter 4) was used as media to determine the pretreatment of surface water, biodegradation characteristics and removal characteristics of water pollutants. The results indicated that increasing EBCT increased the removal effi incry in biofilter. The optimum EBCT was 30 min and the removal effi incry of biofilter 1 was more stable than others biofilter. The removal effi incry of turbidity, color, CODMn, UV254, KMnO4 consumptionTheH4+-N and DOC in biofilter 1 were 93.7, 89.1, 89.2, 72.7, 81.4, 93.9 and 58.9% respectively.
