<Floating Island> by Park Kyung Ri shows the complex point of view about the woman which is constructed/excluded in the period of post Korean war. The war widow, Hyeon Hee is called as 'dangerous woman' in the aspect of sexual desire, and class. But in this thesis, I want to examine the gendered criticism about post-war Korean nationalism and modernization project through the re-evaluation about this woman. The main woman character, Hyeon Hee makes an effort for her family instead of dead husband-patriarch, but in the area of outside, she desires the romantic love with the married man. By the way, she criticizes the snobbish reality, and analyzes her own adultery. Therefore, she has the multiple identity through insistent movement between private area and public area, between mother and lover, between logic and desire, between romanticism and reality. This complexity reflects the way of existence post-war intellectual woman. After the failure of romantic love, she chooses the marriage with the realistic man. But her choice is based on the logical free will, and will for the life. In conclusion, <Floating Island> investigates the 'floating' existence of post-war woman, so this novel can destruct the domesticity ideology, and nationalistic ideology which is combined with patriarchal ideology. And this inner-destruction is accomplished by post-war intellectual woman who has an intellect and emotion, romantic traits and criticism about the real world.
