As a case of the more general loss of affixes in English, there is an increasing tendency for speakers to use flat adverbs in place of -ly adverbs. Taking a close look at data from flat adverbs such as quick in a sentence Come here quick, this paper motivates an adjectival analysis of flat adverbs. It is shown that flat adverbs pose unyielding difficulties to the 'standard' adverbial analysis and lead to inconsistency in category classification, as they behave more like adjectives than adverbs. An answer is sought in a radically different analysis, under which these flat adverbs are treated like predicative adjectives and subcategorized for by the preceding verb.
