This study investigates subject and object markings from an empirical perspective, and proposes two discourse-pragmatic factors for their analysis: processing load and informational prominence. The factors well capture the presence and absence of such markers. More specifically, ka, lul or both tend to overtly occur in a clause when the subject or the object of a clause or both would represent processing load, informational prominence or both, and they tend not to overtly occur in a clause when neither of the two factors is represented by the subject and the object (Kyung Hee University).
