The duration of this study was from June 1, 2007 to July 30, 2007 and twenty bedridden female elderly residing in a facility served as subjects of the study. In this study, 30 minute foot reflex massages were performed on bed-ridden elderly for 8 weeks with the frequency of every other day, blood samples were collected prior to and after the study, and changes in their leukocyte subtypes that represent their blood composition and immune function were observed, and it was conducted and with the purpose of presenting foot reflex massage as a therapy for bed-ridden patients in facilities that take care of bed-ridden elderly and to present the results of the study as basic material in pursuing welfare policies for the elderly. The results of this study showed a statistically significant difference in the packed red cell volume with 36.37±9.43%, prior to the test and 37.82±10.19% after completion of study (p<0.05). Platelets also showed statistically significant differences with 21.00±6.36 (103/cm2) prior to the test and 22.28±6.23 (103/cm2) after the study (p<0.05). As for leukocyte subtypes, lymphocytes showed an increase from 33.00±7.87% prior to the study to 35.92±5.12% after the study showing statistically significant differences. Eosinophil showed a statistically significant decrease from 3.42±0.51% prior to the study to 2.43±0.64% after the study. Thus, it was shown that foot reflex massages had the same circulatory effects on the elderly as having performed physical activities and significant increase and decrease of lymphocytes and eosinophil shows that the massages have the effect on inducing improvement in the immune function and therefore it can be concluded that foot reflex massage is a therapy that can be performed with positive effects on elderly who are bed-ridden.
