Chunsik Kim(U.C. Berkeley, Visiting Professor) 2005. Im-Hwa's Modernity and Tradition. This study is focused on Im-Hwa's attitude for “SINMUNHAKSA”(新文學史, history of new literature or modern literature), purpose of description to literary history and his thinking about processes of conflict between modernity and tradition. this approach to objects of my study belong to work to reconfirm for the identity of Korean Modern Literature in colonial age. The reason, why the argue for Im-Hwa's “ISIKMUNHAKSALON”(移植文學史論, the essay of planted literary history) has important location in the study about modernity of Korean Literary history, is basically that Im-Hwa's issue stems out of defining modernity of Korean literature or Korean history. Actually, Im-Hwa's insist is discussed, coming and going between “NAJAJEOKBALJEONLON”(內在的 發展論, theory of developing modernity by oneself) and “SIKMINJIGEONDAEWHALON” (植民地 近代化論, theory of developing modernity due to colonial rule), by disputants because IM-hwa's theory, simply, not only emphasize “ISIK”(移植, planted culture) itself but also simultaneously, emphasize important of counteraction for modernity or tradition. However, the limits of Im-Wha's theory is found the place on which he doesn't resolve the relation between tradition and modernity except to make abstract diagram. Especially, like Im-Wha's insist, the abstractness of concepts for “MINJOK”(民族, nation or folk), democratization, social class supposed by him in the situation which the individualism is not matured in, is easy to lead concepts of tradition and “ISIK” to a diagram abstracted.
