Among 92 Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains isolated, only 5 were urease-positive, and all 92 strains showed nohemolysin activity. V. parahaemolyticus YKB4 and YKB14 were isolated from seawater, YFB20 from black rockfish (Sebasesschlegeli), and YFO21 and YFO22 from olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). The five urease-positive strains showed nohemolysin and protease activities, but showed biochemical characteristics identical to reference strain, V. parahaemolyticusKCTC2471, except in urease production. They showed urease activities at mid-stationary phase, and maximal activity at latestationaryphase. Mortalities by urease-positive V. parahaemolyticus YKB4, YKB14, YFO21, and YFO22 were significantlyhigh, 60-80%, while YFB20 showed 20% in ICR mice. Protease-positive V. parahaemolyticus FM39 and FM50 showed 40and 60% mortality, respectively. Hemolysin-positive V. parahaemolyticus showed no mortality, as with non-pathogenic V.parahaemolyticus KCTC2471. Mortality by urease-positive V. parahaemolyticus strains occurred within 12 hr of injection, andvibrio strains could be isolated from viscera of injected mice.
