Phenolic compounds from caryopses and embryos of triticale (cv. Bogo and Ugo) were extracted into 80%methanol. Total phenolic contents in extracts were determined and their UV spectra recorded. For all extracts antioxidantactivity in β-carotene-linoleate model system, scavenging effect on DPPH radical, and reducing power were examined. Totalphenolic contents varied with part and cultivar, with those of Bogo and Ugo (5.02 and 4.96 mg/g, respectively) in caryopsesbeing higher than those of embryos (Bogo 4.59 mg/g; Ugo 4.42 mg/g). UV spectra of all extracts were characterised bymaxima at around 270 and 320 nm due to phenolic compounds. All extracts showed good antioxidant activity in β-carotenelinoleatemodel system. Antioxidant activity of extracts paralleled their contents of phenolics; triticale caryopses had strongereffect than extracts of embryos. Embryo extracts showed higher DPPH radical-scavenging activity than caryopses extracts.Ugo embryo extracts possessed strongest reducing power.
