A Study on the 'Labor Riot' at a Korean Giant Shipyard in 1974 Jun Kim (Sungkonghoe University) This paper focuses on the 'labor riot' at the Hyundai Shipyard in 1974. Two main aims of this paper are as follows: First, based on newly collected materials and oral testimonies of the participants, this paper tries to reconstruct the incident, which have been relatively unknown or mis-understood; Second, it also analyzes the dynamics of a 'violent collective action' in a giant shipyard. Reconstruction of the violent strike shows that the it has much more complexities in its' causes, process, and the interests of the participant than it has been known. The analysis on the process of the transition from a simple protest behavior to a huge and extremely violent riot gives us a chance to review on the previous studies and theories on riots and collective violence. It also gives us a rare chance to look into the life-worlds of male workers in the heavy industries of 1970s, and shows that their quiescency and violent eruption are the both sides of a coin.
