When Catholicism was introduced to Korea, traditional funerals were mostly carried on by the ruling class. After the Revolution of 1894, however, many commoners began serving traditional funerals as conventional social hierarchy collapsed. The uniform ritual has been diversified by religion, family, and region with the fall of Confucianism in Korea. Among traditional funerals, the song of carrying the bier and the song of forming the mound are transmitted. These songs are generally sung my professional bier carriers as an interactive performance. The following proposals would allow us to combine traditional funeral music with Catholic Yeondo and sing traditional music with no time and space restrictions. First, the lyrics of Yeondo shall add various contents besides self-reflection, praise, and prayers, based on the Bible. Second, verses shall be applied to one-tone-one-beat style for singers to understand and appreciate the lyrics. Third, melody shall have starting, continuing, and ending melody based on Korean traditional melody. Fourth, singing shall be interactive between two teams rather than between the father and the believers. Fifth, various dynamics shall me applied, especially for Mi, Sol, Ra, and Do, and pushing tone, gliding tone, vibrating tone shall be used appropriately. Sixth, Yeondo used in masses liturgic shall be designated as cultural heritage for preservation and transmission.
