Carnitine is essential for the transport of the long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane into the mitochondrial matrix, the site of β oxidation. Carnitine supplementation enhances fatty acid oxidation during exercise and, hence, spares glycogen. In this study, the effects L-carnitine on fat metabolism during exercise were examined in untrained women. Seven subjects ingested 3g of L-carnitine or a placebo for 5 days and did exercise. L-carnitine tended to significantly decrease the respiratory exchange ratio and lactate concentration during the latter stage of exercise. These results suggested that short-term administration of L-carnitine promotes fat oxidation and spares glycogen utilization during exercise.
