The objectives of this study are to investigate the importance of participation of continuous exercise program and to verify the effect of gate ball exercise by analyzing the difference in body composition, physical strength, and lung capacity of old persons who participated long-term regular gate ball exercise program. 55 subjects who are older than 65 and participate gate ball exercise more than three times a week were selected and they were divide into three groups by exercise experience. Group I(n = 19) has 1~4 years experience, and Group II(n = 19) has 5~8 years experience and Group III(n = 17) has more than 9 years experience. The results are as follows.1. The %Fat of Group III is significantly lower(p<.01) than that of Group II.2. There was significant difference in the results from functional reach test(p<.001) and one leg stand(p<.01) between Group I and Group III, and between Group II and Group III.3. The results of lung capacity shows significant difference(p<.01) between Group I and Group III, and between Group II and Group III for FVC. For FEV₁ Group III has significantly higher(p<.05) values than Group I. For old persons long-term regular gate ball exercise program has positive effect on body composition, physical strength, and lung capacity. Moreover the program can be recommended for the prevention of a hurt from a fall and fracture and for active daily life.
