Han-sik Kim. 2007. Study on the Usage of 'Teineitai' among Grade School Alumni: in Cyber Club and Group email. Language and Linguistics 39, 75-90. With development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), online dialogue has become a new means of communication. Since online dialogue didn’t even exist 15 years ago, its style of expression is very different and unique from ordinary dialogues and traditional letters. Against this backdrop, this thesis studies expressions found in grade school alumni cyber club and group email, particularly the ‘usage of teineitai(term of politeness)’ in sentence ending. The study conducted over two months time still showed a high usage of teineitai, even in online dialogue. In addition, it has also been found out that the ‘usage of teineitai’ is more determined by a person’s character or a theme of the conversation rather than by gender.
