The Piano Lesson shows that racism and capitalism have been the main oppressive violence toward black American since slavery period in America. Black people traveled long journey in search of liberty, independence, and success but they found that they were still in discriminatory labor system. To claim their equality to the public, black predecessors violate the social laws by means of liberating violence such as gunpower. It gained public attention on the black issues but it also disrupted the legitimacy of their goals. Charles family in The Piano Lesson went through a vicious circle of violence. They felt glories and sacrifices from it but two different points of view on legacy lead black people to conflicts. August Wilson suggests that black community confirms members’ solidarity through reciprocal supports. It enables black people to gain the power to keep the dominant ideology in check and balance. The Piano Lesson invites audience to realize the mystifying reality of the oppressive violence and spontaneously participate in the political action to change an unequal society through exorcism.
