Residents’ attitudes toward and perceptions of tourism development in their community are a key factor in the success of sustainable tourism. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between residents’ community attachment, their perceptions of the economic impact of tourism, and their support for tourism development. A self-administered questionnaire was developed and collected in residents of a resort site in Korea. A proposed model was tested using a structural equation modeling technique. The results indicated that residents who have lived in the community longer are more likely to perceive negative economic impact of tourism, and to oppose further tourism development. The implications of the study are discussed.
