My interest in this paper is in comprehension of indirect anaphors in English and Korean and in particular in how hearers decide on the intended interpretation of an utterance in Korean. In this paper I will concern myself with how hearers make an inference leading to the right selection of the referents for indirect anaphors when there is more than one candidate referent in the first sentence in a sequence of two conjoined sentences. For this purpose I will compare a relevance-based model of comprehension with focus- or topic-based, truth-based, and coherence-based approaches to reference resolution. In the relevance-based comprehension model cognitive effects may constrain derivation of bridging inferences so that the optimally relevant interpretation of an utterance is generated.
