The subject films of this comparative analysis study are Dangerous Liaisons and Untold Scandal. Dangerous Liaisons was derived from Pierre Ambroise Francois chodelos de Laclos's (1741~1803) 1782 novel. Untold Scandal (Director: Lee Jae Yong, 2003) was comparatively analyzed against Dangerous Liaisons (Director: Stephen Frears, 1988) This paper studies the cultural background of the two films, attributes of temporal and spatial background, and thereby rhetorical approaches. Also studied is how the original work was adapted to approach the audience while forming the films' narratives.Studies on rhetorical editing during screen editing and on the variations of narratives entailing adaptation show that rhetorical editing of screen intensifies the immersion of the audience in the movie and the deepened immersion enables the audience to actively participate in the narratives of the film.Image rhetoric delivers messages not so munch through phenomenological approaches of image as through the unfolding of symbolic meanings and the framework of story. And in this process, image constitutes narratives of underlying messages rather than a physical motive.
