It is well recognized that, in discussing a Hyangga based on {Samgukyusa}, it cannot be completely free from its background narrative. Thus, although there has been an effort to emphasize the independence of Hyangga from the word, background narrative, itself, as long as the essential notion that examining a work of Hyangga is a matter of its understanding and interpretation does not change, the understanding of it cannot be made except through its background narrative. The understanding of the hyangga, <Wonwangsaegga>, can also be effectively made when based on the <Gwangduk · Umjang> narrative. This study has developed its point perceiving that the <Gwangduk · Umjang> narrative is a typical character narrative which maintains the basic narrative frame, not recognizing the particularity that it is a background narrative of <Wonwangsaegga> based on {Samgukyusa}. By examining its structure and analyzing the characters using leitmotif, the most basic methodology in narrative study, I understood that the <Gwangduk · Umjang> narrative is a folklore that follows the structure that Umjang, the hero, overcomes trials and conflicts and fulfills <Wonwangsaeg>. Through this examination I concluded about the matter of the author of <Wonwangsaegga> that it is a song sung by Umjang.
