이 글은 한국소설에서 저항의 기수로 평가받는 남정현의 <허허선생> 연작을 중심으로 <분지> 이후 그의 문학적 변모 양상과 민족자주의식을 조망함을 목적으로 한다. 20여 년의 시간 위에 구축된 <허허선생> 연작은 우리 근현대사에서 주요 모순으로서의 민족모순과 그 극복과정을 고스란히 드러내고 있다. 부자간의 대립을 중심으로 외세와 매판세력 대 식민지 민중이란 이분법적인 구도를 형성하는데, 연작의 후반부로 갈수록 대립의 균형이 무너지고 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 상황 변화에 기인하는데 민주화의식의 축적과 민중의 성장이 주요 원인으로 작용하였다. 따라서 비판의 방식도 우회적인 풍자에서 직접적인 형식으로 변화한다. 이 과정에서 일관되게 발현되고 있는 남정현의 민족자주의식은 민족문학의 지평을 확대하는데 중요한 선구적인 인식으로 작용하였다.


Study on <Heoheosunsang(許虛先生)> of Nam Jeong-Hyun Hong, Sung-sik This writing took a view of one of the forerunners in resistance in Korean novel, Nam Jeong-Hyun's literary changes and awareness of national independence after the series of <Heoheosunsang(許虛先生)> and one of his novels named <Bunji(糞地)>. The series of <Heoheosunsang> established in the span of about 20 years wholly exposed the national contradiction and its overcoming process as main contradictions in our recent and modern history. Especially, he formed a dichotomic structure of foreign power and the people in the colonial rule focusing on the conflicts between a father and his son, and it has been noted that the balance of its axis has been collapsed as the series went further. While the father 'Mr. Heo Heo' was a large-scale symbol of the comprehensive situational evil(狀況惡), his son 'Heo Man' existed as an individual person whose role has be! en changed into the role of an observer. This was attributable to the changes in situations, which the accumulation of the idea of democracy and the growth of the ordinary people functioned as primary causes. Therefore, the method of criticism changed from the roundabout satire into the direct form Nam Jeong-Hyun's awareness of national independence shown consistently in this process functioned as an important leading awareness in enlarging the horizon of national literature.
