The study of language and gender is a relatively recent phenomenon, which has been significantly influenced by Feminism. The nonsexist language movement grew out of the women's liberation movement of the 1970s, in opposition to sexist linguistic factors such as the generic "he" used in formal and written English and the generic "they" referring to singular antecedents in informal and spoken English. English has far more negative and 'insult' terms for women than for men. In language and gender studies, the focus on women's way of speaking is an effort to validate the dimension of women's language use that men often denigrate. The deficit, difference, and dominance theories are not mutually exclusive. All three views focus on accounting for women's language. All three emphasize a simple male-female opposition and downplay the real complexity of gender-based patterns of language use. Much emphasis is placed on how gender as a social construct affects language use.
