The present study aims at understanding the realization of focus structure in Mandarin by investigating an acoustic focus marker, F0, and a syntactic focus marker, shi(是). It examines how these two types of focus marker manifest focus structure, and further discusses that despite the presence of focus marker, sentences may remain ambiguous in terms of focus structure. This study also compares the realization of F0 contours between syntactically-unmarked sentences embedding pragmatic focus and the corresponding shi-sentences, and shows that shi can help F0 contours cue focus structure under some circumstances. To better understand the interaction between F0 manipulation and shi in manifesting focus structure in Mandarin, further research should be conducted using sentences with diverse focus structures. A perception experiment is also warranted to shed light on how listeners perceive focus structures cued by focus markers.
