Er-lang(二郞) is one of deities in Chinese folk belief. The origin of the belief in "Er-lang" is based on the historical records about the flood control project performed by Li-bing(李) in "Shi-ji(史記)". The story of his irrigation gradually has taken a mystic color and Li-bing, the hero of Si-chuan(四川) also gradually has been deified as Er-lang-shen(二郞神). The second person called Er-lang-shen(二郞神) is Zhao-yu(趙煜) in Song(宋) Dynasty. The belief in Zhao-yu is related with the prevalence of Taoism(道敎) all over the country. The image of Er-lang(二郞) is transformed as that of a Taoist ascetic. In Ming(明) and Qing(淸) Dynasty, the title "Er-lang(二郞) is put on the head of Yang-jian(楊). The imagery of Yang-jian is a kind of mixture of all the characters of Li-bing and Zhao-yu. In addition the character of Yang-jian is transformed into a deity of severity and cruelty.The transition of the identiy and imagery of Er-lang(二郞) is reflected into each genre of performing arts like Zaju(雜劇), Shuo-chang(설창) and many ritual drama(儺戱) in every dynasty.
