A simple method of controlling the pulse width of a passive Q-switched laser (PQL) is proposed. The initial inversion density of the laser gain medium, irrespective of the loss of the cavity bounded with an additional stimulated Brillouin scattering output coupler (ASOC), makes it possible to vary the pulse width of the PQL only by changing the length of the cavity bounded with ASOC. Furthermore, the energy extraction efficiency can be enhanced by 1.3 times that of the PQL. The experimental results are compared with the numerical results.
