This thesis is not only to review the studies on the educational institutions in the early Chosun dynasty but to suggest the direction for the further study. First of all, the trends of studies can be summarized as follows : 1. The studies concerning national schools, especially Sung-Kyun-Kwan(成均館), form a majority of all the studies. 2. The studies performed by national history researcher form 75%, which don't provide us many information about the education since they are interested in the conditions of society at that time. 3. Since the historical materials adopted by researchers are overlapped, there are not much difference in their findings. 4. The researcher can't reveal the dynamic situations for students to utilize the educational institutions to succeed in the civil exams. And the suggestions derived from the review are as follows : 1. The activities of the private schools are to be examined closely, since they took the main part of education then. 2. New historical materials such as prose collections in that time should be found and adopted, and they need to be translated in Han-Gul. 3. Those who major in history of education should focus the conditions of education rather than that of society then. 4. The new cultural historical approach is important, since it is expected to reveal the way of students' thinking and acting regarded as the major factor to have a crucial effect the education at that time.
