이 논문은 도덕적 상상력의 발달과 기능을 강조하는 도덕교육방안을 제시한다. 이 논문은 세 부분으로 이루어진다. 첫째, 도덕적 상상력의 인지적, 정의적 요소를 도덕판단에 관련시킴으로써 도덕적 상상력의 기술과 설명, 그리고 도덕적 상상력, 도덕 판단, 도덕적 행동 간의 상호관계를 분석한다. 둘째, 도덕적 상상력을 발달시킬 수 있는 도덕교육의 특성에 관해 기술하고 설명한다. 셋째, 하퍼 리(Nelle Harper Lee)의 소설 『앵무새죽이기』와 같은 문학작품, 짧은 개인사, 영화를 활용하여 학교도덕교육에서 실천할 수 있는 도덕적 상상력 교육 방안을 제안하였다. 도덕적 상상력은 일반적으로 인간의 상상력의 한 부분이다. 이 논문에서는 존슨(M. Johnson)의 정의를 따라, 도덕적 상상력은 주어진 상황 안에서 행동을 위한 다양한 가능성들을 상상적으로 식별하고, 선택한 행동으로부터 초래될 수 있는 잠재적 도움과 해악을 그려볼 수 있는 능력으로 정의된다. 고양된 도덕적 상상력을 가진 도덕적 행위자는 다른 사람의 복지 그 자체를 목적적인 가치로서 적극적으로 존중한다. 우리가 현재 직면하고 있는, 그리고 미래에 직면하게 될 많은 복잡한 도덕적인 상황들 때문에 우리는 도덕규칙과 원리 이상의 도덕적 능력을 갖추어야 한다. 도덕적 상상력을 발달시킨 도덕적 행위자는 더 높은 수준의 도덕적 판단능력을 가지게 될 것이다.

In this article, according to Johnson, moral imagination is defined as an ability to imaginatively discern various possibilities for acting within a given situation and to envision the potential help and harm that are likely to result from a given action. and so, moral agent with a heightened moral imagination is will positively values the other's well-being as an end in itself. Because of the many complex moral situations we face and may face in the future, we need to be armed with more than just moral rules and principle. a moral agent with cultivated moral imagination will have greater ability to make sound moral judgement.
