Kyung-Ah KimHenry James changed existing narratology by originating a method of center of consciousness which develops into stream of consciousness. It is implicated that James' new method reflects the philosophical trend of phenomenology, when Alfred Schutz remarks that "phenomenological reduction reveals the stream of consciousness" ("William James' Concept of the Stream of Thought Phenomenologically Interpreted"). As M. A. Williams says, the phenomenological impulses prevail in James'thought. Like James, Wittgenstein emphasises phenomenological description, for he innovates the idea of logic that embraces, reflects, and mirrors all the life of the world, and explains that the logic of the world can be described only by phenomenological grammar. For Wittgenstein, the phenomenological description is identical with originating language games and forms of life based on the concept of depth grammar. James embodies its process by dramatising correlative scenes in his novels. The way of phenomenological description is characteristic of James' narrative and style, in which story-telling is projected. In the absence of an omniscient narrator, the control center of consciousness of a character(Strether) exerts over the text seems to be in itself the phenomenological bracketing. Namely, Strether's center of consciousness which describes the other characters and actions brackets all the conventional customs and values of Woollett society and suspends any superficial judgement on Chad and his relationship with Madame de Vionett. With this phenomenological epoche, he intuits the essences of Chad, Vionett, and Parisian culture as they are in themselves. This means creating new meaning and new language game of Parisian culture.
