HyunJong(顯宗), the eighth king of Goryeo Dynasty, was born in 992A.D. His Mother was HunJungWangHoo(獻貞王后), the wife of King KyungJong(景宗), and she died while she was giving birth to HyunJong. Hyunjong and his father AnJong(安宗) lived together in Sacheon(泗川) Region for four years. They lived at the temple of BaeBangSa(排房寺) near WaRyong(臥龍) mountain. There was a sunghuangdang(城隍堂), a village shrine, in which AnJong always prayed that his son would come to the throne. Sacheon local gentry helped them, in return for their help, some of them entered government service. HyunJong had to face many problems before he was enthroned. First of all, ChonChooTaeHoo(千秋太后), the mother of King MokJong(穆宗), had another son, who was the outcome of her illicit love affair with Kim Chi-Yang(金致陽). Therefore ChonChooTaeHoo forced HyunJong become a monk, and later abortively tried to kill him several times. MokJong ordered that HyunJong succeed to the throne, because MokJong hated his own mother, ChonChooTaeHoo. Chae Choong-Soon(蔡忠順), Choi Hang(崔沆), HwangBo You-Oe(皇甫兪義) helped HyunJong to ascend to the throne. Kang Jo(康兆), the commander of West-Northern Region, agreed to MokJong’s order. Hence, HyunJong successfully became a king. The first reason that HyunJong became a king is that he was a grandson of King TaeJo(太祖). Another reason is that Buddhist monks protected him. Therefore, HyunJong employed the policy for idealizing TaeJo and worshipping Buddhist belief. He also carried out several policies for Sacheon region. For example, He raised the status of SaSooHyun(泗水縣) to SaJoo(泗州), he also awarded the prize to people who helped him during his childhood. He returned the farmland given him by the Sacheon people to them.
