We study the quantum motion of a charged free particle in a constant and/or oscillating electric field. We find a Gaussian wave packet, which is a coherent-squeezed state of the free-particle Hamiltonian. We further find a more general class of wave functions, which are superpositions of displaced number states of the free particle. The Gaussian wave packet for the free particle is obtained as a limiting of case of the Gaussian wave packet for a charged oscillator in the same electric field.
