Causes and Types of Phonological Variation So, Shin-ae The purpose of this paper is to overcome the limits of previous studies which assumed a homogeneous language community. In this paper, I will define the notion of phonological variation and investigate the causes and types of phonological variation using data from the Yukcin dialect in the North Hamkyeng Province. Phonological variation is a phenomenon in which a lexeme or a phonological variable has more than one pronunciation in a single speaker or in a single speech community. Phonological variation is categorized into Alternation- governed Variation(AGV) and Underlying Form-governed Variation (UFGV) according to the types of optionality. AGV results from optional alternations and UFGV results from the optional selection of an underlying form. Optional alternations result from the addition of new alternations by gradual reranking of constraints. The optional selection of an underlying form results from the addition of new underlying forms.
