We have investigated the transient characteristics of the pulsed proton injector for the Proton Engineering Frontier Project (PEFP) proton linear accelerator. We have observed the characteristic rise time and time delay in the ion beam extraction. Through careful analyses, we have learned that the characteristic rise time depends on the intrinsic stray capacitance of the power supply system and the current-limiting resistor. In addition, we have noticed a time delay induced by the non-linear dependency of the extracted ion beam current on the extraction voltage and by the dependency of the focal length of the solenoid magnet on the ion beam energy. The observed transient characteristics should be considered in the pulse timing to generate a well defined pulse when the pulse length of the ion beam is comparable to or shorter than the characteristic rise time and the time delay.
