Lee, Minkyung. 2006. Uniformity Analysis of Korean Verbal Conjugative Suffixes and Their Historical Changes: Focus on Inflectional Affixation. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-1, 101-124. The aim of this paper is to provide an alternative analysis on Korean verbal conjugative suffixes and their complex and asymmetric behavior found in the process of inflectional affixation. This paper proposes that Korean inflectional suffix variants /a, ə, o, u/ can be accounted for by positing /ə/ as the underlying form. Its different outputs are the result of constraints and their interaction viewed from Optimality Theory perspective. In this paper, it is argued that when two vowels are concatenated over a morpheme boundary, a stem-final vowel is uniformly deleted but its stray features are realized onto the following suffix vowel. In this line of thought, no disparity of verbal conjugation is witnessed. Note that the schwa suffix is monomoraic, thus its deletion means no realization of a morpheme at all, a crucial violation of M-Parse. Interestingly, Korean verbal conjugation in inflectional affixation shows different behavior historically. The presence or absence of optionality in elision from Mid-Korean to Modern Korean results from constraints and their ranking change. (Daegu University)
