Samhyŏn yukkak Appeared in Pictures of the Late Chosŏn Period Hwang Mi-yŏn Samhŏn yukkak 三絃六角, consisting of haegŭm 奚琴 1, taegŭm 大笒 1, p'iri 피리 2, changgo 杖鼓 1, and puk 북 1, has been one of traditional instrumentations for the ensembles both of court music and folk music from the early Chosŏn 朝鮮 dynasty onwards. The aim of this paper is to investigate various picture of Chosŏn dyansty showing the samhyŏn yukkak. This paper is based on pictures such as Annŭng sinyŏngdo 安陵新迎圖, P'yŏngyang kamsa hyangyŏndo 平壤監司饗宴圖, Modand Hong I-sang p'yŏngsaengdo 慕堂洪履祥平生圖, P'yŏngsaengdo 平生圖, Mudong 舞童 by Kim Hong-do 金弘道 (1745-1806), Ssang kŏmdaemu 雙劍對舞 by Shin Yun-bok 申潤福 (1758-1813), and Tongnaebusa chŏpwaesado 東萊府使接倭使圖, Tamwa Hong Kye-hŭi p'yŏngsaengdo 淡窩洪啓禧平生圖, Iwŏn kirohoedo 梨園耆老會圖 by anonymous. This paper consists of such topics as 1) Introduction, 2) Samhyŏn yukkak Appeared in Picture of the Late Chosŏn Dynasty, 3) Instrumentation of Samhyŏn yukkak, 4) Interrelationship with Pictures of the Early Chosŏn Dynasty, 5) Conclusion. In conclusion it is pointed out that samhyŏn yukkak was used for the accompaniment of dances and for marching music, and that the basic instrumentation of samhyŏn yukkak (haegŭm 1, taegŭm 1, p'iri 2, changgo 1, and puk 1) would be changed according to circumstances of performance.
