A Basis of Music Aesthetics through Ch'ŏn'giron Kim Young-uk [Kim Yŏng-uk] A purpose of this thesis is to study the relationship between poem theory and music theory, and characteristics of ch'ŏn'giron 天機論, a basis of music aesthetics and music psychology since 18C were determined. The word ch'ŏn'gi 天機 was sporadically used in several anthologies but not systematically studied as music theory in music. In this chapter, the basic concept on ch'ŏn'gi from Changja ꡔ莊子ꡕ (Chuang Tzū in Chinese), thoughts on ch'ŏn'giron at the early period of Chosŏn Dynasty, and ch'ŏn'gi as the core of the artistic thinking which Hong Tae-yong 洪大容 (1731-1783), Maak Nocho 磨嶽老樵 (1688- 1744), Chŏng Nae-gyo 鄭來僑 (1681-1757) spoke for at the late Chosŏn period were studied. Ch'ŏn'giron, which late Chosŏn singers pursued is considered superior to any other concepts in music aesthetic. Ch'ŏn'giron, which was directly reflected in the performance developed with poem theory, painting theory, writing theory side by side, and became the basis of aesthetic thinking at the late period of Chosŏn art.
