이 글은 현재 한국무속 연구에서 중심적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 강신무세습무 개념에 대한 비판적 검토를 시도하고 있다. 이를 통해, 이 글은 한국무속 연구의 이론, 범주, 개념에 대한 비판적인 성찰과, 나아가 한국 무속 현장에 대한 보다 현실성 있는 서술을 위한 범주와 개념을 모색하는 계기를 갖고자 한다. 이 글은 먼저 기존 무속연구에 대한 연구사 검토를 통해 강신무세습무 개념이 근대초기에 역사적으로 형성된 개념을 밝히고 있다. 또한 강신무와 세습무의 유형 구분의 문제점을 지적함으로써 강신무세습무 개념의 한계를 밝히고 있다. 이 글은 강신무세습무의 개념이 입무과정에서 나타나는 무당 개인의 종교적 체험에 초점을 둔 개념으로 파악하면서, 앞으로 무당의 종교적 체험에만 한정되지 않는 보다 다양한 각도에서의 한국무속에 대한 연구의 필요성을 주장하고 있다.


A Critical Examination on the Concept of ‘Gangsinmu’ (possessed shamans)-‘Saeseupmu’(hereditary shamans) in the Studies of Korean Shamanism Yi, Yong-Bhum* This article intends to a critical examination of the concept of ‘gangsinmu’(possessed shamans)-‘saeseupmu’(hereditary shamans) that occupies the central place in the studies of Korean shamanism. Through this critical examination of the concept, this artical aims to have a chance of reflecting on the present studies of Korean shamanism, and seek after more suitable concepts for describing the realities of Korean shamanism. First, this article shows that the concept of ‘gangsinmu’-‘saeseupmu’ was a historical formation which was constituted by the modern studies of Korean shamanism in the modern era. And this article makes clear the limits of the concept by pointing out the problems of the classification of Korean shamans into possessed shamans and hereditary shamans. This article contends that the dominant tendency of present explanations of Korean shamanism is to give a excessive importance to the individual religious experience of Korean shamans, and that it is needed to look at Korean shamanism from various viewpoints to arrive at the comprehensive understanding of Korean shamanism.
