Kim, Yu-Kyung. 2006. The Use of Actually in English Non-native Speakers' Converstion. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 6-1, 23-42. This study investigates English non-native speakers' interactional use of discourse marker actually. The data for the study is drawn from approximately 170 minutes of spontaneous conversation between Korean non-native speakers. The framework of this study is Conversation Analysis (Schegloff, Sacks and Jefferson, 1974). Each of the tokens of actually has been coded and analyzed, according to its placement in Turn Constructional Units (TCUs), i.e., TCU-initial and TCU-final. The results reveal that the non-native speakers' detailed functions of actually are different from those of native speakers'. Non-native speakers do not demonstrate different interactional use of actually at different TCU positions as native speakers do.
