Protection Policy of Chungyo Muhyŏng Munhwajae in the 1960s Yi Chang-yŏl The law of cultural protection for Chungyo muhyŏng munhwajae 重要無形文化財 was established in 1962. Thus in 1964 the Ministry of Culture and Information began to appointed distinguished artists as Muhyŏng munhwajae kinŭng boyuja 無形文化財 技能保有者, ‘holder of artistry of intangible cultural assets’ commonly know as In'gan munhwajae 人間文化財 ‘human treasure.’ In order to understand the cultural policy of government in the 1960s, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the protection policy of Chungyo muhyŏng munhwajae on the basis of source materials in the Bureau of Cultural Property (Munhwajae kwalliguk 文化財管理局). This paper consists of four topics: 1. Introduction, 2. Protection and Preservation of Intangible Cultural Assets, 3. Protection Policy for Muhyŏng Munhwajae, 4. Conclusion. In conclusion the author points out the following suggestions concerned with the Bureau of Cultural Property: 1) Development of educational programs for the intangible cultural assets, 2) Urgent nominating the other important items of Munhyŏng munhwajae, 3) Preservation for prototype of nominated Munhyŏng munhwajae.
