This essay is one of the papers which was presented at the symposium for “The Status and Prospects of North Korean Performing Arts” jointly held by the Society for Korean Historico-Musicology and the Korean National University of Arts on 26th Oct., 2001. The purpose of this paper is to make an examination of the North Korean dance in Korean style since 1990s. This essay consists of 1) Ideology and Arts of Socialism in Korean Style, 2) An Analysis of the Contents of Dance Theory by Kim Chŏng-il, 3) Present Status and Change of North Korean Dance since 1990, 4) Prospects of North Korean Dance. In conclusion the author points out the two aspects of North Korean dance:one is negative aspects and the other, positive aspects. The negative aspects are as follows: (1) Dance music is accompanied not by a traditional ensemble (samhyŏn yukkak 三絃六角), but by an orchestra in western style; (2) The traditional choreography of folk dance is substituted by that of western ballet style; (3) The improvisatory elements of traditional dance are disappeared; (4) The problem of damaging the original form of folk dance. The positive aspects are the followings:(1) The development of folk dance based on folk songs; (2) The establishment of choreography as folk performing arts in modern stage of theatre; (3) The attempts of creating new repertories of folk dance; (4) The maintenance of national identity in newly created dances.
