This essay is one of the papers which was presented at the symposium for “The Status and Prospects of North Korean Performing Arts” jointly held by the Society for Korean Historico-Musicology and the Korean National University of Arts on 26th Oct., 2001. This essay aims at investigating the musical characteristics of revolutionary musicals known as hyŏngmyŏng kagŭk 혁명가극 parti- cularly five works on the basis of the music style of P'ibada 피바다 (lit. “Bloody Ocean”), the most famous one of the revolutionary musicals. Besides the musical P'ibada, the four revolutionary musicals are (1) The True Daughter of Communist Party (Tang ŭi Ch'amdoen Ttal 당의 참된 딸), (2) The Maiden of Selling Flowers (Kkot P'anŭn Ch'ŏnyŏ 꽃파는 처녀), (3) Let's Tell the Thick Forest (Millima Iyagihara 밀림아 이야기하라), and (4) Song of Mt. Kŭmgang (Kŭmgangsan ŭi Norae 금강산의 노래). This paper consists of 1) Introduction, 2) Year of Composition and Composer, 3) Songs as a Model for Revolutionary Musicals in the P'ibada Style (P'ibadashik 피바다식), 4) Songs of Stropic Form (Chŏlga 절가), 5) Songs by Off-stage Singer (Pangch'ang 방창), 6) Instrumentation of the Orchestra, 7) Scale, 8) Conclusion.
